The Face Shot Saga
February 12th, 2008 | by Daniel |So last Tuesday Duck Or I’ll Hit You In The Face took on Face Shot in a no-holds-barred dodgeball match. Not quite. To begin with, they showed up without any balls (literally and figuratively), and had to borrow two from one of the teams that was playing previously. Had the other team not been so gracious they would’ve been screwed.
One of the things that bothers me about this league is that there are no refs for the matches. This invariably results in at least a bit of bickering during matches but I don’t think anyone was prepared for the crap that happened with this team. It all started with an accidental head shot from Thomas. The opposing player pretty much freaked out and very angrily yelled at Thomas to get off the court. Now, head shots are not fun, but they do happen. I’ve actually been hit in the face quite a few times so I can attest to the fact that it’s really not a big deal. We were understandably taken aback by his reaction and we weren’t too happy about it.
After that point, they constantly accused us of intentionally aiming for the head, hitting their girls too hard, you know name - they called it. We made an effort to hit very low (read: in the shins) and they still complained, angrily and irrationally. One of their players in particular, a really tall, gangly balding guy was particularly agitated about the whole thing and even went so far as to come over to our bench and get in Mike’s face (though I’m still not sure why he picked Mike specifically - he didn’t do anything). I think some of their frustration may have had to do with the fact that we were beating them quite mercilessly.
The real kicker was that after playing for about 20 minutes they actually packed their bags and LEFT. That’s right, they walked out of the game. We were all pretty shocked and upset, we wanted to keep playing! When we got home I entered the game score (11 - 1 at that point) and gave them a zero for spirit points. I was expecting some sort of complaint filed against us or at least a dispute of the score but they approved it, giving us 3/5 spirit points in the process. I thought about this a bit and decided that I would go ahead and file the complaint against them. They were unprepared, rude, aggressive and walked out of the game barely halfway in. Still waiting on some action from the TCSSC on that one - I’ll be sure to post the resolution.
In light of all that we’ve made a couple of decisions in an effort to avoid a similar situation from happening in the future. I’ll be bringing printed copies of the rules to games from now on, and I’ve asked all members of our team to voice their concerns during a game to Jordan - she’ll be our point person for handling disputes with the other team. Hopefully this will reduce the pointless arguing and let us concentrate more on having fun (and winning).
Anyone else think it’s ironic that their name was Face Shot? We certainly did.
