Windows Vista Ruins My Day
March 1st, 2008 | by Daniel |I’ve been running Vista for the past few months and I gotta say, I’ve had very little to complain about. That’s not to say I’m terribly impressed by the OS either, especially considering the amount of time that we all had to wait. I’m not sure what the folks at Microsoft were doing during all that time but my experience with Vista has been underwhelming to say the least. The only reason I switched from XP was so I could hook my Xbox 360 up to the new Media Center (and because I’m a nerd tech junkie) but it turns out that the streaming over my wireless network sucks so I don’t even use it. Anyway, I digress…
Today I woke up ready to finish off some work I’ve been doing for shareaglass.com. I fired up my PC and surprise! - Vista won’t boot at all. Right as I was expecting the login screen to appear my monitor went black and into standby mode. I spent the next couple of hours trying to get this working to no avail - running the Vista repair utility from the installation DVD, trying to start in safe mode, etc. Nothing worked at all. I was starting to get pretty frustrated. Everything was working fine the night before when I had shut it down normally before going to bed.
I finally gave up with the troubleshooting and started thinking about what I was going to do. I’ve been running Ubuntu on my notebook for a while now and I’ve been happy with it, so I considered getting rid of Windows once and for all but at the last minute I reconsidered. I had a lot of of data on my hard drive that wasn’t backed up and I still rely on some Windows-only software to get my work done. I figure I’ll make the leap soon, but today I just didn’t have time to find the alternative software/setups that I needed.
So I reinstalled Vista. But I’m not happy about it! It’s now 9:30pm and I’ve just finally gotten my system back up and running with most of what I need to get my work done. But now I’m too tired and I’m a day behind on my work. Screw it, I’m heading to El Mocambo to see my friend play tonight.

Dude, I hear ya. I have a crush on Ubuntu and often dream of a day when I can kick Windows to the curb, but work gave me a laptop with XP on it and there are still some work apps I need that are Windows only. So, I still work in Windows even though I hear Ubuntu calling my name.
Speaking of work, a couple of members of my department recently jumped to Vista and both are probably going to roll back b/c of an assortment of issues. I’ll live with XP on my laptop, thank you very much. This Vista sounds dangerous!

Yeah I’m sorry I ever installed it to be honest. Let me know when you take the plunge with Ubuntu - I’m loving it on my laptop. To be honest, one of the only reasons I’m keeping Windows around is because I play World of Warcraft every now and then (shameful, I know).
