god and money

One of the problems of glorifying the past is that you edify social institutions that have long become archaic and meaningless .  Take roman catholicism’s bedroom relationship with the aristocracy of yore.  That relationship is on ample display wherever I’ve been in Austria, so far, with religious shrines and monuments lavishly decorated by, who else, but the aristocracy of yore.  I guess something’s gonna have to give while over here, I’m gonna have to get used to it, because Europe seems to be heavily entrenched in the business of edifying the old in castes of gold and marble.  These pics are of Vienna’s most famous cathedral, StephansDom, and the Zentral Friedhof, one of Europe’s biggest cemeteries, where god and money a lot of famous classical musicians are buried.

I was in a weird mood when I sat down to write how I felt while in the cemetery.  You’ve been warned.

bye bye worldly possessions

There are moments in life that make you realize how meaningless plans are, how meaningless thoughts and theories are and how all that matters is the physical world and the present tense.

gaul du banque

My, how things move quickly in Vienna.

Had an interview yesterday to prepare the 12 year old son of a Doctor for his Grade 2 Conservatory exam in piano.  The problem is his exam is just over a month away and he hasn’t had a teacher in months.  The problem too is that I was planning on heading to Salzburg, then Innsbruck,  then Vorarlberg, to visit family and mountains and sights.  A bigger problem is that my TD bank card has yet to work at any ATM I’ve tried.  I spent half an hour on the phone yesterday with a TD supervisor who hadn’ t the foggiest idea why my card wasn’t working. “Just keep trying different ATMs”, was her advice.  Fucking banks.  If they’re not robbing you for hard-earned dollars by ridiculously inflated and meaningless service charges, they’re making it next to impossible to access your own funds.  But that’s what I have to do today.  I’m going to scour the city for an ATM that will give me my money, in which case I’ll be able to go for a shortened trip to Innsbruck, Fulmpes (Tirol) to visit family and to deliver my grandmother’s ashes.  If I can’t access my funds, I ain’t going nowhere and begin work next week.

the old world is depraved and decadent and green

It’s slowly becoming apparent that the cliched photographs everyone’s seen of Austrian ‘culture’–architecture, history, etc.–is nothing more than the celebration of extravagance, something that is still very much alive today but takes on varying forms.  I’ve stumbled upon towering edifice after towering edifice, and whether it’s a Catholic church with barbed spires reaching the ether, or an ancient Opera House with Greek or Roman gods peering down from dizzying heights, I’ve felt that all this show is somewhat mundane; not just from repetition but from the very fact that it is so glorified.  Why are we as humans preserving such ancient relics that attest mostly to the perpetual gap in wealth distribution, something that may exist in less dramatic fashion today, but nonetheless still thrives?

I suppose the answer is: for the sake of beauty.  And, sometimes, it’s hard to argue with that point.  As in this case.  Sisi's freakin awesome
