the old world is depraved and decadent and green

I’ve stumbled upon towering edifice after towering edifice, and whether it’s a Catholic church with barbed spires reaching the ether, or an ancient Opera House with Greek or Roman gods peering down from dizzying heights, I’ve felt that all this show is somewhat mundane; not just from repetition but from the very fact that it is so glorified. Why are we as humans preserving such ancient relics that attest mostly to the perpetual gap in wealth distribution, something that may exist in less dramatic fashion today, but nonetheless still thrives?
